Here’s what I gave Dad for Chrismukkah. He said he used to order the #2: a hot dog “all the way” with onion rings…for $3.40!
Do you remember Angelo’s? It was run by Mr. Junes (pronounced June-us) and was in the basement of the downtown Thalhimers store for a number of years. They had tiny jukeboxes at many of the tables, which was always a lot of fun for my sisters and me!
Who wants a hot dog?
What a wonderful gift! And by the way, your Dad looks great. Please send him my regards. –Scott LIppmann
I remember going to Angelo’s with my Dad (in the 50’s) when they were on 5th St and the place was very narrow. The only seats were at the counter and the place was always full. That’s where I learned to love chili dogs! I also remember going to Thalhimers after they moved.
I wondered where they were located prior to Thalhimers. I know Angelo’s originally opened in 1933. Another Richmond institution, for sure!
I am a lifetime native Richmonder and grew up with Bobby Junes, and his sister, We attended Ridge Elementary. Their Dad was Angelo’s owner. But as I recall we pronounced the name Junes, like the month. Great memories, as was Thalhimers chocolate layer cake!
Can you still order theses if so and where
Hi, Pat. I found it on ebay! It’s the first time I’ve seen an Angelo’s item come up for auction, but I’ll let you know if I see another!
Thanks Elizabeth:):):) Brings back lots of memories and heartburn!!!!!!!!!! Love Dad
Angelo’s was the best! My sister and I used to go there and eat lunch with my mom somtimes, who worked downtown. Wish it (and Thalhimer’s!) was still around…
Angelo’s chili dog was a ritual for my mom, aunt, sister and I while growing up in Richmond. That was back in the mid 40’s. Thalhimer’s and Miller & Rhodes was THE places to shop for clothing and we loved going there.
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE tell me someone has the recipe for their chili. It was the BEST chili I have had in my lifetime. It was a dark brown color and had a different spice in it. I have searched the internet up and down for the recipe. When I worked downtown in the late 60s, I would be walking up to Angelo’s on 5th Street and low and behold, I would run into my dad, who was going to the same place. We absolutely love Angelo’s!!!
I’d be VERY interested in bringing this institution BACK to Richmond. I remember going to the restaurant in the Farmer’s Market in the 70’s with my dad. My first chili dog and a special memory for me. With the new ( pending ) redevelopment of the area around the Richmond Coliseum, I think it would be a perfect addition. If anyone knows how to get in touch with descendants or Junes family members who would be interested in leasing the name and may have the recipe, please have them contact m at drcharity2@aol.com
I would like to know the onion ring batter recipe.
Would love to know the recipe for the onion rings!
Worked 7grace for att would walk up there and eat 4 all way
It used to be on 14th Street before moving to Thalhimners. I used to order two all the way with rings…the best I ever had.
They were located originally on 18th st. The hot do chili had no tomato sauce or ketchup, it was clear and delicious!
