That’s what my family always says when they raise a glass for a toast!
Today’s reason for a toast: my brother-in-law, John Adamson, just dropped by with a gift. He found an unopened bottle of “Taylor New York State Golden Sherry” – most likely purchased by his late grandmother – with the Thalhimers price tag still on it. She got a good deal. The original price was $4.99 but had been marked down to $3.99.
The Taylor Wine Company dates back to the 1880s. When do you think a bottle of Sherry cost $3.99 at Thalhimers?

It pains me to say this…but probably during the last days before the liquidation sale (since the liquidator probably didn’t have an ABC license).
Were you brave enough to sample it?
Sadly, I think you’re right Rob. Bit that’s still a 20 year old bottle of Sherry! We weren’t brave enough to sample it. I don’t think Sherry is known for improving with age!!
I’m sure there’s someone still around from the Finer Foods department who could decipher the codes on the Thalhimers price tag. I’m guessing the wine is from long before the liquidation, because May Co. had practically dissolved Finer Foods months before the end. Perhaps this bottle is from as far back as 1986, because that is the most complete code on the tag. Thanks for the new post!
Good thinking. Actually, the tag has the old Thalhimers script…so it pre-dates the May Company. It must be from the 1980s.
