We took our daughter ice skating for the first time this past weekend at the rink on the old Thalhimers block. Oh, how I miss the animated Christmas windows, Santaland, the Snow Bear Shop in the igloo, winding around the paths to meet Santa, and singing at the Snow Bear Breakfast. Lyla will never know these things…but she ice skated atop plenty of memories frozen in time!
What a wonderful memory for you to give to her. Every Thanksgiving after we had our dinner my Mom and Dad would take us downtown to see the windows in Thalhimers and the other stores. It was such a great thing to be able to do and see each year what was new in the windows. As a child to look from outside in at those windows is something I will always remember and will never forget. That time, era I wish we could go back to. I might be old fashion but the time now we are living in will never compare to what we had then.
Two big memories of Christmas……………….Thalhimers and Macy’s. I wish every child could experience that jaw dropping thrill
IT makes me sad too, Elizabeth, that many children will never have that memory. Both of my daughters remember Thalhimers, but very differently…Kelly remembers it as a vibrant, fun place to get Angelos french fries and hide under round racks, and visit Santa and Snowbear. Brie could only look through the almost boarded up windows and exclaim, “Eeeuw, Mommy, why did you work in this run down place? How yuckky!”
